Summary
This presentation explores the pioneering work of Tidal Moon, an Indigenous-owned and led enterprise transforming Australia’s blue economy. It highlights how the company is blending traditional knowledge with modern science to sustainably harvest sea cucumbers and restore vital seagrass ecosystems—an essential nature-based climate solution.
Seagrass meadows, capable of capturing ten times more carbon than terrestrial forests, are at the heart of Tidal Moon’s innovative approach to blue carbon. Through a partnership with Conservation International Australia, the project is not only regenerating critical marine habitats but also laying the financial and strategic foundations for a nature-positive, climate-resilient future.
The session will demonstrate how First Nations stewardship of Sea Country can lead global efforts in sustainability, carbon sequestration, and Indigenous economic empowerment, establishing scalable models for ethical supply chains and ocean restoration across Australasia and beyond.
About the speaker:
Michael Wear is a Mulgana Traditional Custodian in the World Heritage Area of Shark Bay in Western Australia. He has spent more than 30 years working on and around the ocean caring for the environment and supporting the creation of Indigenous jobs.
In 2017 Michael established Tidal Moon, the First Nations owned and led sea cucumber harvesting business focused on the sustainable development of seafood production and marine bioresources to create an Indigenous Australian industry with supply chains throughout the Australasian and North American markets.
In addition, Tidal Moon is making waves in the Australian blue carbon market with their seagrass restoration project as seagrass captures and stores ten times more carbon than land-based forests. Conservation International Australia are partnering with Tidal Moon to build the financial foundations to sustain and accelerate both the restoration and the nature-positive business into the future.
In 2025, Michael was appointed as the Professor of Practice (Indigenous Environmental Conservation) at Murdoch University within the School of Environmental and Conservation Sciences. A landmark appointment for Murdoch University, as Michael became the first Professor of Practice based on his deep traditional ecological knowledge.
